Points for 68V are extremely high right now, well over 750 (780+ last I heard), what are some top ways to stand out above my peers? Last I looked, I was just over 500 points currently; I know Drill Sergeant isn’t worth any points, but how much does it help a soldier to stand out in consideration of E-6 promotion? I have 6 years until RCP date and the next months are all that stands between my current duty station and plotting out the next.

Im not 100% sold on the idea, but it is something to consider. If it were something I chose, what would be the top prep focus areas building up to the school date (aside from AWT)?

I get that. I did it at 32 and it wasn't that easy. I would look at your brunch to see what they recommend on their career path. When the points are high they are targeting those that usually already have what they are looking for. If you are not in that group you will usually have to wait till they exhaust those with the most points and hope they have more slots.

CPT (Join to see) I figured that would be the best path. I’ve got 8 months left in Bliss and a preliminary talk with branch says Germany is certainly on the table. I was in Grefnwhere (I know I butchered that spelling) and just happened to see a DS school there so it seemed like a solid option. I’ve no idea what other schools are in the area. Off hand Master Fitness and Master Resilience were my top picks but with my current fitness plans to compete in a bodybuilding show in October, I have to wait until after before I pursue them.

Now I know that it's a lot different in the Army now that in the 80's and 90's, but what are the realistic chances of hospital Tech being able to swing a seat to Ranger School? The 75th and Infantry Officer Basiic still gets the bulk of the seat, then priority to the 18th Airborne Corp, The rest of Army Combat Arms, the seats for the Marines, Air Force and Navy, etc. Unless it was reward for Soldier of the Year or something, I would think that Respiratory Specialist would be behind a 91B in the 3rd ID.

CPT Lawrence Cable - Its really up to whoever wants to go. When I was in the 82nd we had a cook that was a jump master and a Ranger qualified as an E5. Some people may ask what need was there for him to go to those schools but it's the development of the soldier that was the focus.

DS, or teaching at all, or recruiting, helps you on centralized promotion to E7.

For E5 to E6, you control your own destiny on:
Military Training (PT/IWQ) max 255
Military Education (PME+online) max 220
Civilian Education (online) max 160
If you are maxed out on these, that is 635 points before you even count any awards/badges.

And cutoff for PZ (70 mo TIS/16 mo TIG) in your MOS is 601 this month.

If you are recommended for promotion, there simply isn't any value in trying to "stand out above your peers" other than simply doing the work to get more points. You can look sharp and do everything to be a fine soldier, but none of that has anything to do with when you get promoted. Once you are on the list is it ALL ABOUT THE POINTS.

SGM (Join to see) already gave you the answer. You need to max out each of the categories of training and education. Check your record to see what points you have. If there are any points that you should have but aren't recorded you need to work with the S1 to get those points documented and recorded. Then work on earning more points -- military correspondence courses are usually one route to pick up more points (note that correspondence courses do not need to be directly related to your MOS)
