But firearms aren't allowed in the recruiting stations now, and this guy still shot himself. There have been plenty of other firearm related incidents in recruiting stations. I know a station commander that was held hostage by his recruiter. Also, many recruiters already carry guns while on duty, or keep one in their desk. Sooooo, I'd say the laws on the books make no difference in what actually happens. Might as well make it legal.

SFC Walter Mack there is a law on the books to allow present and past military LEOs to carry concealed (Law Enforcement Safety Officers Act) and DoD is having a hard time getting that implemented. And this is for people that have had a lot more training with pistols than the average service member. And I know that there will be problems with how some of newer military LEOs will act while carrying one. I can't imagine the problems if they allow non trained people carry. Can you imagine what would happen if there is an active shooter and the MPs show up? Who do they engage?

SGM, life is full of tough decisions. I'm more concerned about the people who are killed by an active shooter because they are unarmed. Should we allow the body count to climb simply to save the MPs the trouble of making an uncomfortably decision? More importantly, most civilian sector active shooter incidents are over prior to the arrival of police, saving them from making any decision about whom to shoot. If the criminal is dead, and all has calmed when the MPs arrive, I'd say they'll be pretty satisfied with the outcome, and we'll have fewer CAOs to put to work. As a kid, we had student vehicles in the HS parking lot with guns on racks. Those 16-17 year old kids were responsible enough to handle guns. I can teach a 12 year old to respect a gun and properly utilize it to hunt or defend the home from an intruder. If we're concerned about untrained service members having guns, I'd say let's train them. It's easy & quick, and should be sufficiently covered in basic training anyway. I'd even be happy to meet in the middle and add some further requirements to carrying a gun. All recruiters should definitely have a concealed weapon though, as they are big shiny targets everywhere they go. I even had a few guns pointed at me as a recruiter, mostly from irate parents who didn't like me on their porch, but it takes getting used to.

This kind of proves my statement that we cannot just arm anyone because of the position they are in. A pistol is not like a long barrel. You need more training with a pistol than a long barrel.
