Recently I saw an opening for a First Sergeant in Antarctica and I wondered if there are more opportunities for someone like me (E-3 Crew Chief.) I'm looking for opportunities to go to McMurdo, maybe working Transient Authority or something like that. My airframe doesn't go to Antarctica but I've been told opportunities do arise for anyone to go. Where can I find these opportunities? I've been told the Guard Beauro website but I'm not sure where to look on there.

The AF and ANG run C-130s and C-17s between Christchurch and McMurdo. There remain some assets deployed to run ATC, Seabee Cargo Handlers, etc. You can look up JTF Antarctic Support Forces. We used to have a much larger Navy presence when the Seabees ran the construction and Public Works back in the day.

In 2012 I managed the entire maintenance effort for the Armies only Modular Causeway System (331st TC) for a joint resupply mission to McMurdo station in support of Operation Deep Freeze. This was totally a unique experience that I couldn't imagine that I would be a part of when I first enlisted in the Army.

I am sure that the Guard Bureau has a website that lists all the available tours. Inquire with your leadership where to find it. The Reserve/IMA side has Volunteer Reserve System (VRS). You can access it through AF Portal and check it out. Good luck!
