I see a lot of things covered, but the 71-series designation that I have done while in the service covers personnel, pay, typing clerk, mail, orders etc.

Wel~~l, you see, what happened was, when the idiot that develop the computer code for the Army wrote the code, "... [end of text] [start of heading] [unit separator] ..." and he fed the MOS series in, 71L happened to be fed in between the two sets of buffers, "[7]-[end of text]+[1]-[start of heading]+L-[unit separator]". The result was 42A. If you want to see the proof look up the ASCII table, you'll see my complicated b*ll sh*t of explanation.
On a serious note, from what I was told was that the Army wanted to have the enlisted's MOS to be aligned with the officer's MOS, for example, 11A - Infantry officer and enlisted was 11x, 11B, 11M, 11C, 11H, etc. So, 71L was changed to 42A. That's what the DA's official memorandum about the MOS changes I read when I was working in the infantry company TOW room. I was unfortunate enough to be the only one who could type, admittedly. Yeah, I was the idiot who admitted that could type while others just played dumb.

That's interesting.
I spent a few months in a 71L30 slot a long time ago, but I was reassigned after 1st PERSCOM had a hissy fit because I was an 19E40C5 at the time.

PV2 Timothy Crater - just said you were 42A, but back then was 71L. If it's for VA related document, just use 42A or simply call them and ask. If it's for civilian matter, just say HR or Human Resources specialist.

PV2 Timothy Crater - Don't MOS code, just use Human Resource Specialist. As you are confused what it is now, most people would not know what 42A is. You have just join their club. The HR specialist sound very professional, trust me. :)
