I look at people in the 16 yrs I've been serving and barely see a third of prior service doing what they did while serving or even close what they did

I could never have found a job in the private sector comparable to my military job unless the airlines started shooting their competitors down - so when they called the war off I had to find something completely different.

I was an Intel Analyst, and I do Administration/Operations/Management now. i do quite a lot of the same things I do now that I did then.

It's a case of looking for the "overlap." I was a dispatcher for a while (a couple years, plus secondary duties now), and once I wrapped my head around the idea that Technicians in the field are a lot like Recon/Snipers in the field, it just clicked.

I'm still working in IT. That's what I did for the majority of my 20 years in the Navy and have done nothing but IT work since I retired.

If your a IT person or work in logistics in the military, I believed that you wouldn't have a problem of landing a civilian job. For me who's job in the Army was 12H ( Construction Supervisor ) . When I go to these job fairs for veterans, employers has a rough time wrapping their heads around that the US Army has construction. I believe the picture that they have in their heads is us running around kicking in doors shooting people or jumping out of airplanes and drive tank it really sad that the Army commercials don't show carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and heavy equipment operators. United States Army need those assets during wartime for building base camps, building air strips , road repairs and more. I feel that it a damn shame the American workforce don't have a clue of the broad range of work experience and management skills that one soldier has . Here's my last job description .

Construction Engineering Supervisor (MOS 12H) Description / Major Duties:

The construction engineering supervisor supervises construction, repair, and utility services of buildings, warehouses, fixed bridges, port facilities, and petroleum pipelines, tanks, and related equipment.

Duties for MOS 12H at each skill level are:

MOSC 12H3O. Reads and interprets construction drawings. Estimates material, time, equipment, and labor requirements.

Supervises the construction and repair of wood frame, concrete, masonry or prefabricated structures. Supervises the installation and repair of utility systems.

Inspects structures and facilities to ensure compliance with specifications.

Directs operator maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment. Directs combat engineering missions.
