Got the chance to run the General Chesty Puller 10k (6.2 miles) down in West Point VA today. It was hot as heck! And in true Marine Corps fashion, the put hills on the course in the form of two large bridges. Elevation map looked like a roller coaster.
We passed by Chesty's house around mile 1 (pictured), made our way to the first bridge (1.5) went up & up & up.... finally going down for about 1/4 mile only to turn around and go back up it... Wife & kid were not happy.
Mile 3-4~ relatively flat leading to bridge 2 which was much like bridge one, just longer. Turn around point was at 4.75 miles and a lovely 82deg! Did I mention the wife wasn't happy?
Saw quite a few folks taking the "discretion is the better part of valor" approach with a nice leisurely pace on the way back, myself & family included. Peaked the the final bridge at 5.5 miles, for the final downhill leading to the flat finish.
Edit: Added elevation map. Doesn't look like much but combined with the heat it was enough to make you just shake your head when you saw the bridges.
