Availability is a National Guard concept, the Active Duty uses strengths of the MOS. It's very possible that your branch simply does not need your MOS on Active Duty. The active-duty AF doesn't recruit by units. They recruit specialties or a set knowledge, skills and abilities that qualifies for the specialties they need. And then you would enter that pool of specialties available for all units to tap from. So any recruiter worth their salt would ask probing questions about your experience, motivation and ASVAB scores (if they even call it "ASVAB" anymore).
