Is background experience considered for branch placement when going enlisted to commission? Thank you!

Despite traditional opinions, the services determine what areas need persons and those needs are filled with those most likely to succeed in that area. Classification and aptitude test results are considered, as well as background and personal desires, however, needs of the service trumps personal preference. Remember, your role as an officer will differ from that as an enlisted; knowing much about the area from an enlisted viewpoint does not mean you can lead in that area.

Thank you for the information, sir. I'm definitely going to be keeping an open mind.

If this is OCS, yes, it’s considered? When you get to OCS you will be able to request pre-branch. There will be some things you will have to provide for your packet consideration but it’s pretty simple. However, if the branch you desire isn’t available it, it may not matter and you will compete for a branch like everyone else.

SSG Wes Petroff well best of luck to you. If you are looking to get pre-branched in a field you don’t have any experience in, it may be a tough row. Best thing to do is show up prepared. Get some letters of recommendation from some Officers in the branch you desire. You will have to write something, an essay if I remember correctly, explaining your experience and why you should be considered for the branch without competing with your peers at OCS. It worked for me but I wanted the branch I had spent 10 years enlisted in. Again, good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you, sir! I’m getting my packet ready and hoping to board in December. My age and TIS are roadblocks, but I’m hopeful that the waivers will be a go.
