My ETS date would be somewhere near the end of the deployment coming up next year. During some of the preparation processes, the senior enlisted and officers I’ve met have given me different information. We were told that we (~10 pax) have to reenlist before 5Oct of this year to qualify for the deployment but one side says we do not have to extend our contracts yet. They did say there is a memorandum for intent to reenlist I could fill out. They also stated waiting until after I am deployed to reenlist would be best. The closer to my ETS date, the more beneficial it could be as I am a technician and could be offered incentive or bonus under those conditions. I’ve already lost half of the only bonus I would have received by joining the technician program. I do have intent to deploy, I definitely would like to do my 20 years as I’m already halfway through my 10th year, but the idea of a bad deployment ruining the military for me is also floating in my head. The decision for one year or six years would be better determined, to me, on this deployment. All input, advice and guidance is truly appreciated in this subject. Thank you all in advance.

The Army could involuntarily extend you if they need you that badly for the mission. Whether it be a bad or good deployment....that's all relative and speculation.

Understood SFC. I completely understand being mission essential and especially with what is going on, I wouldn’t be too upset with a situation like that. I just don’t want myself or my fellow soldiers to be lied to and coerced into signing for re-enlistment if we have other options, especially since this is the first time I’ve ever heard of a technician incentive for the National Guard. They say it only happens when you’re deployed and need to re-enlist. I’m still trying to track down information about that.

As for a good or bad deployment, my concern is all my soldiers coming back home with me. The only way it would be a bad deployment is if the neglect of the leadership were to affect our soldiers drastically. The unit isn’t a bad unit but there are a lot of red flags when it comes to leadership competencies, communications and accountability.

I am also a miltech with the Reserves as an Army Reserve Administrator, you should have received a miltech handbook upon hiring. If not you then you should have got information at your basic course.
That being said, you can only receive a bonus as a miltech while deployed. Also if I were in your position I’d extend my contract out enough to cover the 400 day requirement and reenlist overseas.

One thing I would say is wait until you’re deployed to reenlist. Tax free bonus. If you get that opportunity.

you are mixing a lot of stuff up here. If you are being offered a deployment, no one is forcing you.
If you need time left on your contract to deploy you can extend and re-enlist on deployment.

The Army has its ups and downs if one deployment can ruin the Army for you...I dont know what to tell you

This will be my first deployment ever. All this information is new to me dealing with the situation. Apparently I’m getting mixed information because of the old stop loss program people are referring to. I definitely want to go but, I want to make sure that the other soldiers have all the knowledge they need about the situation and know what they can or cannot do.

CPL (Join to see) Okay I see now.
-You can be stop lossed, but that doesnt seem to apply here
-You can extend to go on the deployment
-if you re-enlist while deployed generally the bonus is tax free
-you can extend for 1 year, this keeps you in your re-enlistment window
-you cannot be forced or coerced into re-enlisting.
