Think about it, many veterans leave the service with many different skills and foundations. Sometimes not exactly on target with the Job market but they do come with a solid foundation and are ready to learn and adapt, what is so different than a college student, they are not always and very rarely an exact fit. Their life experience is only through a book or what a professor has taught them. And the Veteran, we know the answer to that. What if the Feds offered employers an incentive to start an internship program for Veterans, 6 months, try it before the employer buys it so to speak. Everyone wins, the employers sees the many potential veterans that they normally wouldn’t take the chance on and the Veteran would win because they would get some exposure and experience within the civilian sector. Perhaps be offered a career.

The Soldier for life already has the apprenticeship
Program. It's exactly what you are talking about.

The best thing to do is contact your transition office. The program is relativly new, so beside what I write in my notes during the transition briefing I don't have very many details on it.

If you are going through a MEB at JBLM, WA, they have internships available. They are typically 3 days a week or so, but your commander has to sign off on it. Mine would not, under any circumstance. Which leads me to believe that all SM going through a MEB, should be assigned to a WTU.

It is a definite problem to get the active duty SMs to be involved in anything outside of their Branch of Service. I am not sure what a MEB at JBLM, WA is, but as long as we try to integrate this into active military we will have a challenge. When I was in, it is the Commanders Mission to keep SMs in, not transition them out. In order for an internship to work it will need to be owned by the civilian sector, SMs could sign up on their own after they transitioned out. This is where the Feds can help, they could offer incentives to companies who do more than just pay lip service and actually are involved in helping SMs gain employment through programs such as a Military Internship

I have never heard of any company that would do this.
