How does transferring my GI bill to my child work if I am going back into the service? If I only use a few months of it, is it even still transferable? How long is the minimum to serve in order to transfer? I would love to know. Thanks!

"Am I eligible to transfer benefits?
You may be eligible to transfer education benefits if you’re on active duty or in the Selected Reserve and you meet all of the requirements listed below.

All of these must be true:

You've completed at least 6 years of service on the date your request is approved, and
You agree to add 4 more years of service, and
The person getting benefits has enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS)."

"Children
May start to use the benefit only after you’ve finished at least 10 years of service
May use the benefit while you’re on active duty or after you’ve separated from service
May not use the benefit until they’ve gotten a high school diploma (or equivalency certificate), or have reached 18 years of age
Qualify for the monthly housing allowance even when you’re on active duty
Don’t have to use the benefit within 15 years after your separation from active duty, but can’t use the benefit after they’ve turned 26 years old."

"How do I transfer the benefit?
While you’re still on active duty, you’ll request to transfer, change, or revoke a Transfer of Entitlement (TOE) through milConnect. You can’t apply for a TOE through us.
Transfer, change, or revoke a TOE

If the DoD approves the TOE, your family members may apply for benefits.

Apply online now, or
Apply by mail. Fill out and mail an Application for Family Member to Use Transferred Benefits (VA Form 22-1990E) to the nearest VA regional office.
Download VA Form 22-1990E (PDF)
Find your nearest VA regional office
Once you leave active duty, you can still provide a future effective date for when the TOE can be used, change the number of months transferred, or revoke the TOE by submitting a written request to VA through milConnect."

I found this within a five second Google search of "transferring GI bill to dependents."

Thank you for the information. I am well aware of the rules for transferring Gi bill to dependents if I was still in the service. I am just curious to know if there are other stipulations since I have used a couple of months of it and if the rules change since I would be coming in as Prior Service.

Once you are back in service you will be able to transfer to your dependents. Transfer of the Post 9/11 to family members is a DOD retention tool, VA just makes the payments. DOD will post an approval/disapproval letter on your milconnect account, on the same page where you made the transfer request, the letter will also have a service obligation date, which you must meet or exceed or any payments made to family members will be required to be paid back.

Use your CAC to log into MILCONNECT, click on the button for transfer education benefits. You have 36 months total minus any you used, you give each dependent how many months you want. You go see your Career Counselor to meet the service remaining requirement which is four years from the date of transfer, six for reservists

SGT Kevin Sewell You need to contact the Patient Advocate at a V.A. Clinic. Have you searched on line... just type in your question & follow appropriate links. Good luck!
