Can I wear a boonie hat with a sewn on rank with a combat top that is not sewn on?

My understanding is that you don’t sewn on name tapes and ranks with the combat top. If my boonie hat rank is sewn on is it allowed that I wear it together

Generally speaking, yes. Whether it be garrison or field uniform, the PC is separate from the top blouse/combat shirt.
For an ACU top, if you sew on the rank, your nametapes need to be Sewn on too. However, that doesn't apply to your PC; your PC can still be pin on rank and velcro nametape. Likewise with the combat top/ velcro nametapes and a Sewn on boonie hat.
Whether or not your Company Commander authorizes it in the field is another story.

Yes you can, but good luck getting the commander to let you wear the boonie.
We’d rather just have troops get skin cancer than authorize it most of the time it seems. Probably why I spot a ton of nasty basal cell carcinoma on the ears and on the backs of neck in the VA.
Makes no sense not to allow the boonie to be worn in extreme sun and heat.

Well Sir, I agree with you, the Boonie Hat is the best field hat ever developed by the Military. Hence why they are not allowed. You know as well as I do that appearance in garrison and the field is more important than actual functionality. Some Sergeant Major someplace had a hard-on for Boonie Hats years ago and that dislike of them passed from Sergeant Major to Sergeant Major, even long after the reason was forgotten.

Technically you aren't supposed to sew anything onto any fire retardant uniforms.
