In short we have a Soldier in our squad that has accrued upwards of around 500 hours of community service and has the documentation for it. So we wanted to try and submit him for the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM).

We've asked various S1, but none have ever processed one before. Apparently it's not very common. So they're going to try and do their end, but I also know how busy they are and how stuff gets lost along the way.

If anyone has a template or some advice on processing one, that would be greatly appreciated.

Additionally the regulation does not get specific on what's accepted, it offers an example of 36 months and 500 hours but it states that while it's not defined, approval authorities will ensure the service to be honored merits the special recognition afforded by this medal.

So based on that it seems to be at the approval authorities discretion on how many hours or what constitutes sustained and significant volunteer/community service. Does anyone have any experience with what commanders would consider as appropriate or is it fully on a case by case basis?

every time I've been submitted for an MOSVM by my unit it always ended up getting up graded to an AAM by the Brigade Commander, so some times you may have commander that will decide to upgrade an award because the work you put in on volunteer service or community service maybe considered by interpretation of the regulation that you have gone above an beyond what the regulation requires they may choose to upgrade.

That's interesting, I didn't know you could upgrade the MOVSM like that. I'm sure he wouldn't mind an oakleaf on his AAM if it happened. He plans to continue volunteering regardless though.
