William Kyle Carpenter, one of only a handful of living Medal of Honor recipients, suffered great physical harm when he used his own body to shield his fellow Marines from a grenade blast. As you can tell from the above photo, Carpenter lost one of his eyes, most of his teeth and suffered numerous lacerations. He talked about his wounds in an interview with David Letterman.
However, over 5 years later, Carpenter has made a miraculous recovery. Through numerous surgeries Carpenter no longer looks remotely like the above photo that so many people have seen.
These photos from Carpenter’s Instagram account (aptly named chicksdigscars) show the progress he’s made during his recovery.

Awesome recovery, what this young man has done to come back from his wounds both physically and mentally is a testament to his courage both on and off the battle field.

This is Great News! I'm very happy for him and it looks like he's make a great impact on his community and those around him! Great work hard charger! What an Awesome role model for all of our other great Veterans that have been injured severely in combat!
