I’ve been talking with a buddy of mine who is a UH-60 mechanic in the process of filling out a flight packet and he and I were talking about the benefits of becoming an aviation warrant officer, within the army and in the civilian sector. And I just have a couple questions.

First off, being a 94F headed to an ADA unit at Fort Sill, I feel as though I will be very limited in my ability to get good advice from current aviators and get some letters of recommendation in the process. I am currently studying for the SIFT and have a 125 GT score and all my others scores are above 130 so I’m not worried about the academic aspect as much (however by no means will I take these tests lightly) but more about making my packet look competitive and viable. I am currently flagged for an underaged drinking incident and am getting my second reading for a company grade AR. 15 tomorrow morning, where I was told I will just have two weeks of extra duty, but with my article and not really having many people to talk to in the flight community, I believe that I will be overlooked. I am serious about putting together my packet and believe that, given the chance, I would try my hardest to be a great aviator. Any advice for how to look more competitive/go about talking current Aviation Warrant Officers about the process and how to go about it. Thank you for any and all help.

I Didn't get accepted for flight school because of eye injuring requiring surgery to correct, but here's what I did accomplish before the medical flag.
1. I spoke with Warrant Officers within my own unit's greater organizational structure ie. Engineer Warrants, Ordinance Warrants, Intel Warrants, and I made it known that I was interested. I asked their advice on who to talk to next. I ended up connecting to Flight Warrants in combat and support units. I got a list of every TM FM Sitrep or AAR that I legally could and read them all. Then I socially hooked myself to them, getting unofficial stick time both in military craft and more than one private aircraft. I impressed them with my motivation and knowledge, and they in turn suggested the individuals and politicians that I needed to contact to get into school. Thats what almost worked for me 30 years ago. Take what looks good and make it work for you.

The good news is that at your rank, and Article 15 is in your local file. I would still come clean about it if asked, but it won't be on your permanent record. I've never seen an Army post that didn't have Army Aviation somewhere. Call them up, introduce yourself and ask if you can come over. My experience is the pilots like to talk about flying, go over and hang around awhile.

This is great info. Even if it’s a national guard aviation unit it’s great to just walk in and introduce yourself. 90% of the flight warrants there were ones enlisted and understand the position that you were in. I’m sure that if you go in from time to time to shoot the sh*t and ask for a recommendation once your packet is at least 80% complete they would have no problem giving you one.

I see you’re currently a PFC, so my biggest recommendation is having your PPL if you’re going to submit a packet as an E-3. Only a very small handful of individuals E-4 and below get selected. Still not impossible tho.
