Is transfer from Army reserve to IRR automatic once you hit 6 years out of 8?

It is not automatic. You will need to make contact with your Commander, your Retention NCO and your RPAC (if applicable). There is a packet that needs to be completed.

No. You need to request to transfer. The packet requires a statement from you why you want to transfer, a 4651, and a retention exit counseling.

I got 4 of these packets right now at BN. There are a lot of troops that don't understand this process.

SFC Steven Borders - We had a conversation today about the lack of understanding on all administrative actions in the Reserves. Transfers and separations are just a small piece of the puzzle. I've got Soldiers that can't fill out a 1380 let alone know the proper way to get out of their TPU unit.

If you're asking about transferring then that's been answered pretty well. But if you are asking because you signed a six year contract and want to know what happens after your ETS then that's different. All Soldiers will owe an 8 year MSO. If you separate prior to your 8 year mark you'll automatically be transferred into the IRR Reinf Control Group until your 8 year commitment ends. Even when you're not serving in an AD or RC component that time still counts toward pay if you ever rejoin
