Q: What are your experiences transitioning from the military police/AF security police/master at arms-shore patrol to civilian law enforcement in any state?

I would highly recommend going through a civilian police academy. Even if you have 20 years of of military police experience. The two jobs are similar, but not the same. Everyone can benefit from additional training. And from a legal perspective this will reduce the liability of the Agency. If something bad happens and the opposing legal team starts looking into your training, you want to have the same training standards. I went through a Civilian Police Academy back in 1994. And when I retire, IF (BIG IF) I decide to go back into LE work, I would not be opposed to going back through. A lot has changed since 1994.

Good recommendation, although it is a requirement. Each state has minimum standards they expect you to meet and must be maintained yearly to keep your certification current and active. Moving from state to state sometimes require you to do a brief refresher which consist of state laws etc. Tactics are always evolving and are dictated by terrain and situations.

I decided to do Corrections and not too much of my experience really carried over. If anything, it's the environment in the military that helped make this job easy for me.

In most States, if not all, you have no choice on whether or not you are going to go to the Police Academy. It is a requirement and you will want to anyway because you need to learn and know all of the State's Laws.
