Is it possible for someone to join a Reserves CA unit in one MOS, and then retake the ASVAB to switch to CA (38B)?

Hello everyone so I might join the reserves I’m prior AD 11b I want to join civil affairs but I don’t have the test scores so what the army reserve recruiter told me he would put me in a CA unit as different Mos then from there I can retake the avsab and switch to CA (38B) does that sound right?

Yes, you can join a Reserves unit in one MOS and later retake the ASVAB to qualify for Civil Affairs (38B). You’ll need to improve your scores, get approval from your current unit, and attend any required training for the new MOS.

Theoretically you could join a reserve unit as a certain MOS and later reclass within the same unit. Sure, but they’ll probably want their time out of you performing the MOS they paid for you to get. Which could be years. I’m pretty sure the fastest route to 38B Civil Affairs Specialist would be to study and retake the ASVAB to enlist as one.

That’s the thing I’m prior active duty so I can’t retake the test without being in a unit? What I got from my recruiter is I don’t have to go to ait for a year when I get to my unit during that time I can retake the test and reclass does that make sense?

If that’s the case, then I’d find a POC for the specific unit you want to join and find out if you can do exactly that. CPL (Join to see)
