I learned about the VFW though a discussion here on RallyPoint. I became a member-at-large while I was PCSing to K-16, and two months ago I joined my first local post! I'm a member of Post 12147, K-16 Seoul Airbase. in Seongnam, South Korea.

Here's the discussion that enlightened me and prompted me to join the VFW:

Life Member, District 28 Commander, Department of PA, Post 470 Quartermaster, Erie, PA. It is the new mission of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, (notice I didn't say VFW), to change the perception of what and who we are. We are not bar, we are the largest combat veterans service organization in the world. If your Post is not operating in that manner, then it is up to the active members to make a change of leadership and transform the Post.

In order to recruit the "New Vet" we need to make OUR post family friendly. Give these young veterans a reason to come to the Post. They don't wan't to sit at the bar a talk war stories. They want to get involved. Get your Post involved into the community. Make your Post an asset to the community by going out and perform community service. Build a play ground, go to your local cemeteries and clean up around the grave of our fallen, raise money for a local veteran charitable organization. There are grant programs that National have in place.

The change will take time, but if you inform everyone of the mission, and stay on task, you can get it done.

I'm the Jr. Vice Commander Of VFW Daniel Boone Post 5578 in Madison, WV. I'm very happy with it we help veterans and the community. Scouts Out

I am now the Sr. Vice Commander of our Post #5578 in Madison WV. I have been able to bring about many changes in the Post to make it family friendly, and to make it appeal to Vet's my age and younger. In doing so lots of other Veternas that had given up on the Post now have come back and are active.
