Is it common to not record pistol qualifications?

At the M4 range, there is typically an M9 range as well. Some of us were able to shoot the M9 qualification but were told that it would be unofficial, and not tracked on our ERB. I was told this is how its always been.. What's the reasoning behind this?

It's based on your assigned weapon. If your assigned weapon is not an M9, then it's not gonna be listed as official.

"Unofficial" is a little misleading.
A record fire is a record fire, and is (should be) recorded as such in DTMS, even if you have more than one.
As far as your ERB goes, there is only one line, so that will be your assigned weapon.
As far as USR goes, it is (again) only the record on your assigned weapon, which sounds like M4.

How about those that have a pistol and something else? In my day, MG gunners, thumpers and some others had both weapons and qualified with both. Maybe pistols not issued to these folks any longer?

So my unit is Mtoe'd M9s, but many of them are down for maintenance (waiting on the new M17s). The M9s are assigned to officers and even they have to share them on the range to qualify. My questions relates to if I went to a pistol qual, and qualified. What would be the reasons not document it officially.

Don't know the answer to that one. I do know that the Army is anal about having the "Proper" format for qualification. Just to use an example, why can't you use a diagnostic APFT as a Record one if you pass with flying colors? Simply because it was a diagnostic. Now that seems silly to a lot of people, including me, but that's the rules.
