Just returned from AL-Khobar and a day at the beach (baher Villas) that had some commonalities of back home. Besides desert Hashings, desert fossil/diamond hunting or shopping, what were your favorite get-a-ways while working here?

When I worked for MTMC (now SDDC) back in 96/97... I became friendly with some folks and they took me to Jubail (north of Dammam) and to the huge camel markets outside Riyadh... which i though were pretty amazing.

SGM Paul Shenep (R) as geeky as it sounds i wanted to see the desalinazation plant.... which is massive. They also had a growing international market area due to the expats and TCN that was pretty neat. Outside town there were al add o some ruins that they were digging up but we couldnt take pictures. Hope this is some help. BTW... the Holiday Inn in Dammam used to do "culture" of the month for display and food fests... the indian and the Mediterranean were awesome. Hope they still do that

Actually you could have chosen much worse sites, I would defiantly see something of this nature and process if I lived closer. The Holiday Inn sounds great. Thanks...

I'm thinking I'd go over the Bridge to the Island Country of Bahrain, US Navy 5th Flt. Enlisted Club and Pool there is pretty good. Lots of good beer.

I didn't venture out much but from what I heard from my coworkers it was just as good off base as on. The would come back from liberty full of Garlic Hummus and Beer.

Been there done that! However, as I recall it's a long bridge with few places you can stop for relief after spending an afternoon imbibing on tasty tasty beer.

I spent a couple of weeks In Jeddah back in early 2012 ... it was mostly a work-related visit but I did get to see the sites in and around the city and enjoy what nightlife there was.
