I've been in the army for what will be 4 years in May as a 25Q. The entire time that I've been in, I've been in the same unit on the same post. At first, I couldn't wait to leave, but then life struck me-hard. I don't want to go into detail, but moving duty stations would not be good for me. Here's the thing-my unit is deactivating in October, however my company will be the first to leave in April. I've already decided to reclass to 68X, and I'm currently just waiting on a class to open up so that I can go to Ft. Sam Houston. I'm also planning on reenlisting. I want to work at the hospital on post in their Mental Health Services department. Is there any way that I can request this?

No, you cannot. You could maybe get one of these, but not all of these.

If you're unit is deactivating you might be placed on assignment. If you are, you can only reenlist for the assignment.

If you're not placed on assignment by the time you're eligible to reenlist then you can reenlist to move or reclass. If you're on Fort Sam, then you're most likely in a TDA assignment and have been there too long to reenlist to stabilize there.

If you're not in your reenlistment window, you're not currently eligible to reclass because you're not in an over strength MOS. If you reclass you'll be sent TDY enroute to your next duty station, you don't get to pick that. You will not go TDY and Return, you won't be eligible to request to.

You may very well not be able to get a class seat for 68X before you run out of time. 68X does not take promotable E4. RCP for a non promotable E4 is 8 years so you'll need get a class seat and reenlist for it prior to year 5. If you do receive a CMF68 class seat, you may eventually return to Fort Sam, most likely as an instructor. Fort Sam is the most commonly requested location for CMF68 Soldiers and the branch manager saves those assignments for Soldiers returning from unaccompanied tours like Korea

So I'm currently on Ft Gordon. I'm within my reenlistment window but all I've been asked is if I want to reenlist and what I wanted out of it. When I was asked this, it was not yet announced that my unit would be deactivating so all I said was 68x. I'm currently waiting on my class date but I haven't received any orders or anything else for that matter except for a rank waiver that was approved for my reclass. I am a promotable E4 which is why I needed it.

SGT (Join to see) it was a little confusing when you said you wanted to stay where you were at and then later said you want to work in the hospital at JBSA.

Are you 100% you've received the grade waiver? You sent the 4187 to the Proponent and received the memo from them granting the grade waiver? If you haven't received the memo you need to follow up with that. A lot of people think that when their commander signs the 4187 that's the waiver, but it's not. Just remember your grade waiver is only good for a year, so if your class is over a year away, you'll need a new one, and the school may deny your grade waiver the second time around.

You're waiting for a class seat because there are no class seats. Reclass seats are not like you submit a request and when one becomes available you get the first one because you're in line. There are 1000 Career Counselors out there, all who have Soldiers who want 68X. A handful of class seats become available a year. The first one to click the button and lock it in, gets the seat.

So, best bet is to have a small spread of jobs you will accept, or a backup plan. For instance, wait 6-9 months and if 68X doesn't appear then pick a duty station instead. If you're at a TDA assignment you won't be able to stabilize there. If you're one of those "I'm only doing this or getting out" then just start your TAP transition now. If a class seat pops up then it's a happy coincidence, if not then you've utilized all the time you had for transition.

I apologise. To clarify, I want to come back to Gordon and work at DDEAMC. I definitely received the waiver approval. I have the memo on hand now. If this is as up in the air as you say, I believe my best bet would be just not reclassing as I need to stay here and physically as well as financially provide for family in addition to staying by the side of one family member who may or may not make it through the year (every doctor has a new prognosis).

SGT (Join to see) … If you're within your window to reenlist, not sure the time frame now- but within 1 year they might let you pick you duty station. You'll have to speak with your re-enlistment - retention folks to see what is available. It all comes down to the needs of the Army, but if you're a 1st Term enlistee, they'll usually want to do whatever they can to get you to sign on the line... that is dotted.

I'm within my window to reenlist. My ETS is Dec of this year. They asked what I wanted before I found out that the unit was deactivating so all I told them was 68X

SGT (Join to see) - Just ask for everything you want. If you're a Soldier in good standing, green in all areas- you should be able to get your choice of duty station (based on an actual Army need for the MOS you'd like at that place). If you want an OCONUS assignment (I'd suggest Germany or Italy) then you could potentially ask for that too- especially as a 1st Term re-enlistee... I think the recruiters/retention people get extra points or however they track themselves for 1st term re-ups.

Re-enlistment is when you can request duty station preference. Even if you want to stay in your current location you have to specify that because we all know if it isn't in writing then DOD will fill in the blanks with what is needed. You can try to communicate and request to stay but it's a roll of the dice
