My troop is getting promoted to Sergeant and I want to buy him the Model 1840 or “Non-Commissoned Officers Sword.” There are a lot of nice websites out there that offer the leather or steel scabbard. Which scabbard is most traditional?

The leather scabbard is the most traditional. You can get a good one made in India for around $100 to $150 or a great one through Marlow White made in Germany which costs about $400. If you are a purist you might find one in good shape that is of American Civil War vintage for about $500.

Just make sure you get the right one. There are a LOT of "ghetto knock offs" on the internet. The one in the picture is the correct, NATICK approved model 1840 NCO sword.

How funny, that’s the one I’m getting him. It’s 350$ so that’s kind of a bummer. But! He deserves it so I don’t mind.
