I'm leaving for Basic Training in a week (infantry). How can I reclassify to a different MOS?

PVT (Join to see) - If it's just nerves, then realize that. There is a reason you signed up for infantry in the first place. Go to training, kick its ass, and be the best infantryman you can be. When it comes time to reenlist, if you don't want to remain on the line, request a new MOS. Don't let a little bit of anxiety about the future taint your vision of the direction you wanted your future to go.

PVT (Join to see) - I've been in your shoes. I've done a few difficult things in my time in the military, and it is always the hardest right before you leave. You have the stress of packing and getting your life prepared for your absence, combined with the fear of the unknown. These feelings can quite literally make you think differently. I hope you stick it out, because the more you quit on things like this, the easier it becomes to be a quitter and take the easier road.

I recommend packing early and making a checklist to reduce your anxiety. I also recommend learning as much as you can about your upcoming training in order to diminish the fear of the unknown. Good luck!

MSgt Paul Connors it's not overstated, reclass is my job. The majority of Infantry who have come to me to reclass need to raise their scores. There's always one or two bright people in any group of individuals who are just looking for a challenge, but there are many more who's only options were combat arms, supply, and transportation because of their line scores. In fact, in my last infantry unit I would say over 80% of the 11Bs had below a 100 GT score.

SFC (Join to see) MSgt Paul Connors My GT score was 130. When I was at AFEES, there were recruiters there trying to get me to trade my infantry contract. That is the truth. Look at the majority of four star generals. Almost all are/were infantry. One of my commanders, General Galvin, had a Master's Degree in English from Columbia. Every Infantry Commander I had made 4 star: General Pulastra, General Galvin, General Vuono, and General Burba (he was my Battalion Commander). Nearly every senior NCO I had was a member of SF and/or Rangers and all had CIB's. My squad leader had no combat patch, but was a RIP instructor. He got his CIB in Panama with a Ranger Battalion and was the CSM for the Old Guard to end his 30 year career. The finest and most intelligent men I have ever worked for or with were infantrymen, and that includes professors, doctors, lawyers, and businessmen I have known in my life. It is a bit condescending to say there are a few smart ones in every group. I say that with all due respect. I think you know that because you were a Ranger and SF member.

SGT (Join to see) the majority of enlisted infantry have GTs in the double digits. This isn't an opinion, I've been the Career Counselor in an infantry battalion and I can say that as a fact. Infantry officers are completely different and not applicable to the conversation. 75th Rangers and SF require a GT of 110 (100-110 over the years) and are only pulling the brightest.

It is not my opinion that most Infantry need to raise their GT to reclass, it is my experience that almost all of them who want to reclass have garbage line scores and I can't reclass them until after they raise their scores.
