Bored, intoxicated Fla. teen steals Guard Humvee.
SANFORD, Fla. — The new $8-million Army Reserve Training Center in Sanford now is at the center of a criminal investigation after a heavily intoxicated 19-year-old man stole a Humvee from the facility last night.
His excuse: boredom, deputies said.
Jose Quinones hopped a barbed-wire fence into the motor pool area, where the 436th Civil Affairs Battalion stores the four-wheeled High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled vehicles — commonly known as Humvees.
Although the Humvee steering wheel was secured by cables and a locked padlock, Quinones still managed to drive the vehicle through the barbed-wire fence and a security gate before speeding off the facility toward Deltona, officials said.
"Drivers in Deltona started calling the Sheriff's Office at about 7:50 p.m. to report the odd sight of a swerving military Humvee with no headlights on, dragging a construction barrel under it and running red lights," Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.
Deputies later found Quinones and the stolen Humvee stopped on the side of the road.
They also found a marijuana cigarette inside the vehicle.
Quinones is being held at Volusia County Branch Jail.
His charges include grand theft, DUI, driving an unregistered vehicle and marijuana possession.
