I am USMC veteran that got out in 2004. I am looking to get my medical records. Apparently they are not at the VREC archives for Marines that got out in 2004 like they are for everyone else. They are with the VA Archives, but when I sent a request, they only sent my non-medical records. Any Marines around that year have any luck getting their medical records?

You could send a request to your last medical treatment facility. Most keep records for a few years. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Cpl Bradley Oliger cannot add to what SSG Beverly Smith (Versey-Riley) has stated.

Veterans' Medical and Health Records
Filing a Claim for Medical Benefits? The Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), held at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), are administrative records containing information about the subject's military service history. Many OMPFs contain both personnel and former active duty health records, but the service branches discontinued retiring the health record portion to the NPRC in the 1990s. In the past, all of the military services...

When you put your request in, request everything not just a portion of it. Also with this pandemic it will take some time to get them. Most of NARA in the St. Louis and Metro-Illinois area have been home since 23 March. There is a team working emergencies and burials. There is basically a skeleton crew there and a few folks have had the virus so there has to be a shut down for a day or so to deep clean. I work as a Support Technician there. I'm still waiting to get back to work. FYI. If you ask VA, they have to contact St. Louis as well. And it won't make it much faster, especially now. I hope this helps. Hopefully something works out for you.

Thanks Beverly. I started this request back a year ago. Actually 3 requests. NARA doesn't hold USMC 2004 records apparently. When they forwarded to VA Records, they sent me CD 8 months later.

Cpl Bradley Oliger VA requests were heavily backlogged for years. It took us time to get it down. Some of the services do take care of their own records now. They are digital and you may have to go the service branch HR and make a request. I'm not sure which branches are doing that now. As for medical, those are kept in a different location from the personnel records. You can also call the customer service and ask questions. There are a few people working the phone lines.
