SGT Lugo I am a vet and am upset that all but one job in my career was gotten because I was a vet. I wish there was an expectation out there that a company will hire us on our veteran status alone, but we do have to meet the criteria, in many cases having a degree or particular skill set is one of them. Even being an O got me relatively nowhere on the "leadership skills" side of things.
I've done the rounds of vet hiring fairs myself and there are not a lot of offerings for folks like me with a technical degree, rank irrelevant. A lot of jobs out there are focused on the E-4 - E-5 skill and education level, entry to mid level and more on the service and labor side of things and companies hiring vets will admit that. I attended an event last week sponsored by RallyPoint that addressed some of these very issues and it was both enlightening and insightful to get first hand info from industry leaders in veteran hiring.
If I may make a suggestion, you may want to increase your voting options to get more responses from fellow veteran job seekers out there such as "I was hired based solely on my military experience" or "I was hired based solely on my civilian experience" I think that might get you the results you are seeking. Elizabeth Malkin, Capt Brandon Charters maybe you may have a thought or 2 on this?

SGT John W Lugo Great topic and we did dive into some deep details on this at "RallyPoint for Industry" last week. Biggest takeaway for me was that veterans can all see through the marketing agendas. Companies really need to look themselves in the mirror and ask, "What have I really done for my veteran workforce." Talking to folks like Joseph Wong Lucas Buck MAJ George Hamilton LT George Bernloehr Brian Marple LTC Paul Turevon Michelle Titus & PO3 John Aldrich has taught me that employers and schools who effectively hire, educate, and train vets go through great lengths to provide internal incentive & benefit programs for vets. Hiring & recruiting vets isn't their full-time job either. These programs built within a company's infrastructure are usually developed on personal time from the team members themselves.
Best advice from me is to talk to vets who actually work somewhere you want to be and ask them about the direct benefits and career growth opportunities they have. Roughly 11K employers represented by veterans here in the RP network you can reach out and ask these questions to. I'm always a resource as well. Please reach out anytime.

I am going to have to agree. We have shortened our promotion times for veterans and give them opportunities to come with the recruiting team on trips and share their experiences. We dont target veterans because they are veterans. We target veterans because they tend to be the most succesful in harsh environments and trasition very well into our company.

I was hired as a Service member & Veteran in IT. My job required degrees and experience. and Verizon has been supportive with multiple overseas deployments.
I submitted Verizon for ESGR Freedom Award and they were selected in the top ten in 2012.
Much depends on the manager/director/VP level supporting the service member/veteran but the company usually does a good job.

It's not effective at all. If the company owner have never served in the military and hire military veterans its for their own selfish agendas.
