I recently heard, and confirmed with my finance detachment that a Soldier can be reimbursed for self storage. I moved to Korea nearly three years ago and had to put some of my stuff into self storage; specifically spare parts for my POV. Since I just learned about this, I went to my finance detachment to get more information on this; but they just referred me to the transportation office.  I went to the transportation office and tried to get more information, but the communication barrier was too great. Neither their English nor my Korean were good enough to properly convey the message, so I am left where I started. I know that it is possible to be reimbursed but I have no idea how to go about doing it.

Does anybody know what I need to do to be reimbursed for my self storage while I have been in Korea? I am looking for memos, forms, records I should be keeping, etc.

Any help?

1SG Erik W,

My colleagues suggest downloading this helpful DFAS booklet and contacting DFAS via email or phone at the numbers and email addresses provided in the DFAS booklet with any questions about how to fill out and submit Form DD 1351-2 with all appropriate documentation

Civilian Relocation Travel Voucher Guide: How To Complete the DD 1351-2

http://www.dfas.mil/dms/dfas/travelpay/pdf/travel_civrelo_1351-2howtoguide_062013-/travel_civrelo_1351-2howtoguide_062013%20.pdf

Study the Movement & Storage of Household Goods Section instructions and the completed form example provided on pages 18-19.

In any case, DFAS is the definitive final authority in these matters.

The Defense Transportation Regulation Booklet may also be helpful

http://www.transcom.mil/dtr/part-iv/dtr_part_iv_app_k_1.pdf

Study Section BB. Storage on page 27.

What you are claiming is reimbursement for Non-Temporary Storage.  There may be some issues with the selection of your own storage provider versus government contracted provider.  DFAS might elect to pay actual costs or reasonable costs up to government contracted rate.

My colleagues suggest asking the transportation office at previous station because (1) they originated and have a copy of your travel orders / authorization and (2) maybe they speak the language of your preference.

On the other hand, if you are denied NTS reimbursement for prior storage, perhaps you could get authorization from the transportation office at your previous or current station for storage reimbursement from some reasonable prior date or at least the current date forward since you have already and continue to be incurring this expense.  If you are extending your stay in Korea, this may offer yet another opportunity to request authorization for NTS.

As suggested by LTC Dickey, make and keep your own copies of all receipts.

Warmest Regards, Sandy
