I’m currently a E4 in the national guard as a 88M, I’ve been in since 2018. I’m going to meps to go active, I’d like to reclassify as a 31B, does anyone know the prior business rules well to help me understand better if there’s a chance of me getting 31B?

You’ll be needs of the Army. Likelihood of you getting 31B are slim, due to it being one of the highest demanded jobs in the Army. If you’re in need of the Army and what active duty has to offer, choose the best available and roll with it. The reason you can’t be as picky is the Army is essentially already doing you a solid by letting you switch. You’re basically switching and there is an unwritten understanding that both parties are doing the other a solid. They are allowing you to come active duty when they don’t have to, but they need you to fill a current vacancy. When I switched from Guard to Active, I had to actually wait 4 months for the Army to even allow my MOS to switch to active duty. Probably not the answer you’re looking for, but your chances at 31B are slim.

I went to meps already, I had to stay with my current mos as a 88M, makes sense tho when you word it as both parties doing a solid, thanks for the input.

SPC (Join to see) - Well first off, congrats! A lot of people that attempt to go active duty never get the chance and when they try, they are unsuccessful. I'll follow by saying, don't quit now. I recently re-enlisted within the last few months and I did so for reclass purposes. There is always that option for you down the road. Stay hungry, motivated and a team player! Good luck on your future Army career.

Honestly, go in with the job you want and if its not available go with the second job you want. if thats not available come back another day. don't get coexed into a job you arent interested in. you are leaving your odds of having a good experience in the army up to fate. Just go in with your first and second choice. and if they arent available come back when they are.

Sadly 31B will probably never be available for prior service applicants. And truthfully, your comment and advice will only work if the young soldier has a solid life and setup currently at home. When I switched from the Guard to Active I could not afford to be picky. However, he may be different than I. All depends on how much he can afford to be picky.

It will depend alot on the Needs Of The Army at the actual time you go to enlist. My suggestion is that you ask your recruiter. Ask your recruiter BEFORE you make any changes that you can not reverse.

Recruiters have zero idea about job availability for prior service applicants. That is something they will go over at MEPS. We can pick jobs for non prior service before they reach MEPS, but not the case for prior service.

SSG Clint Underhill - Good to know, but the point is still valid that he needs to do as much before it is set in stone
