if you are single/ no dependents, do you need 1098/1099 forms? W4 as well? i dont remember using these forms last year when i filed.

also this is where it gets tricky...

what if, just by a snowball's chance in hell, i'm unable to find my return from last year? would i still be able to file? or would it just complicate things?

thanks

SPC Andrew K,

If you need a copy of last year's return you can request one from the IRS.

This can take considerable time.  But, if there is no other option, it works.

Warmest Regards, Sandy

Call me - you can get a copy of last year's return from the IRS-just fill out the request on their website.  The only time you need your 1099 form is if their is income AND withholding on it.  What you DO need is your W-2-which you can get a copy of from your Finance unit.  DO file an extension online for your personal income tax return (Form 4868) and also your state extension.  Let me know if you have any questions.  If you have your final pay stub, you can got to Vets-Help.org and file your tax return for free through that.  Good luck!

1098/1099 forms are not related to whether you are single or have dependents. 1099 forms indicate income that you get outside of a regular paycheck (i.e. interest from a bank, side jobs, etc.) and 1098 forms most commonly reflect interest you are paying which you may be able to deduct (i.e. student loans or mortgage interest).

A W4 helps determine how much money is being withdrawn from your regular paycheck for tax purposes. Without a proper W4, you may be paying too much, although if you are single with no dependents, you're probably not.

You don't need last year's taxes to file this year's taxes, but as others have commented, it could make it easier since you can use them as a template. Most bases have a free tax center that can help you as well.
