In light of the Fort Hood Shooting should more Soldiers other than military and contracted security be authorized to carry a loaded firearm while in garrison?

I my opinion Officers, Senior NCO's and any additional duty patrols should be authorized.

While well intended, I'd have to give a negative on this. It would require weapons and ammo control issues. Not to mention potential collateral damage should these weapons be fired in garrison. Leave policing up to base security.

As a senior weapons/combat engineer, My troops and I are well trained in weapons Security/use of these sidearm and would add to the safety of all troops in garrison.

Yes, but if you had guns and ammunition you might hurt yourselves or someone else -- or go off and start an unauthorized war. All the US military services operate on the principle that no one in the military can be trusted with a gun.

Only after 1992. T'was all good until then. I recommend researching incident frequency before and after. Interesting and somewhat counter-intuitive.
