My family has lost our father's Purple Heart and can find no paper support. He was in WW 2 We know his rank but very little else.

Archived records is the first place I'd start.

You may need to know some basic identity information for him (Full Name, Rank, Service Number). Some of that information can be found on other military documents, if you have a DD 214 for example.

In all honesty, I'd request anything they have on him, so you have it.

CPT (Join to see) is spot on. There are a couple of other sources you might want to check. The county records office (hall of records, country recorder, or whatever it is called in your AO) in the county were he lived. Most counties in the US record for free veterans discharge papers and keep them forever. Another place to check is if he ever belonged to a veterans organization, they may still have his service information. Good luck.

Submit a SF180. Fill it out and mail it. You will get a free replacement in about five to six months.

You have to go to the Army Retirement Center, can do it on line. I had all of my ribbons replaced. I guess the Records Center in St Louis, MO is the same for Army records.
