I have never installed pfsense on a physical device. Only on virtual machines that I set up for testing/training/JFF purposes.

I use the windows firewall, but I have direct access to my router. I've set up "least privilege" options into my network; deny everything and apply only the devices within my network to have access. It's not the best option, but has been ideal so far.
