My ETS date from AGR is in 2021. Would you recommend reclassfying in the AGR or going directly into the active component?

Currently an AGR 91B. My ETS date will be Nov 2021 so this year I need to decide whether I'm refrading or realigning my time. I honestly wanna change my mos to something more in the IT field. Would you recommend reclassing in the AGR program or going directly into the active component?

You'd have to check the Army Prior Service Business Rules to see whether you'd be able to keep your MOS, or if not, then what MOS's you can even reclass to if you go Active at https://m.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/current-and-prior-service/continue-serving/return-to-active-duty/prior-service-business-rules.m.html . Basically, you're gonna get treated like youre brand spanking new, but without the perks of being new, such as the bonuses and choice of duty station. Since 91B wasn't listed as a needed MOS for E5, you'd HAVE to reclass to a new MOS. Most of them were combat arms, minus some logistical and MI jobs. I'm currently in a similar boat, where I will be enlisting for Regular Army after I ETS. If you're okay with those possible MOS's, then I'd say go Active because theres SO much more potential in the long run, and so many schools you can go to. Being a 25B myself, I learned about how many SOF units need us, that we pretty much are needed at every duty station, and you get great responsibility as long as you obtain at minimum a security + certification. I know AGR can have it's good days, but it's also not exactly a legitimate Army experience. Since you're looking for a 25B/25U MOS that's not available according to the rules, take a look at 35T... those are the 25Bs of the MI world, but they get wayyyyy more technical and get Top Secret clearances. Talk to the recruiter, get in touch with MEPS. See what they can offer. Good Luck, Brother!

In my opinion I would look into reclassing you should definitely look into some 35 series MOS OR 17E or 17C I just did the same thing from a 91b to 17E. Surprisingly we had more AGR/NG coming to the course 5than we did active duty. It's a great course. But you may get put into the 9 week 17E nco course which is worth it but the course based out if ft Gordon is better. It's a 27 week course and provides more time to learn as well as additional classes. You could also see about doing a reclass into active duty for an IT Job so you could get both perks that you are looking for. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

I spent most of my career on AGR as a 91X. I also spent time in the regular army as well. I think it all depends on what you like.
If you like being AGR - doing most of the work during the drill weekends, then for entire month preparing for the next drill weekend with only a handful of soldiers & Miltech's; doing the work of two, three, four or more people by yourself; & normally working with just a handful of people during the week at the Reserve Center. Then after doing most of the work in the motor pool, your NCOIC gives you a mediocre or poor NCOER (even though you did most of the work and even went out of your way to go above and beyond).
Personally, I did not enjoy that.
While working with the regular army, I saw a completely different working environment. I had way more technical knowledge and work motivation then they did. Even when I was at BNCOC, we had 5 AGR's & 7 regular army SSG's - and I was able to achieve top graduate! The regular army guys were pissed! Lol!
My point is, after 23 years in the military & with most of that in the AGR, in hindsight I wish I would have just gone straight to the regular army - it would have been much more enjoyable and I wouldn't have been thrown into some of these horrible Reserve units that were in the middle of nowhere that didn't appreciate all the hard work that I did. I would have had much better opportunity and had a better environment in the regular army as opposed to being AGR.

I sincerely felt every word in your response. I love AGR but it does get annoying not being appreciated for all the work being done especially in our career field.
