So I just finished meeting with my recruiter and am scheduled to go to meps next week. The only mos I want is 31k military working dog..my recruiter said there were no openings and it is a “unicorn job” he signed me up for military police and said it would be best to reclass down the road into the 31k but I was reading different things online saying it is smarter to hold out until a position for the 31k actually opens up. He did tell me I could still go to meps and then tell them that’s the only job I want and see what they can do. Any advice would be awesome

Your best bet is to sacrifice a baby goat to the gods of your choice. You can hold out all you like but that job never comes up, and when it does, it's taken immediately by the next person sitting in the chair in front of the MEPS counselor.
As far as reclass, I'm a Career Counselor, I'm the person who you would go to in order to reclass. In the seven years since that job became an MOS, I have successfully got one single person into that job. That only happened because a friend was standing next to the person at HRC who locks in the classes when I saw it become available on the system. So, sheer freaking luck. My advice, go and ask for it but have a back up plan. There are lots of other really great jobs in the Army

Hold out! You will have a much lower chance of reclassing to it then enlisting directly into it.

Should I still go to meps and tell them there or just tell my recruiter?

You may want to tell your recruiter that you won’t take anything other than K9 and judge their response. You may have to wait longer for a spot, but if the recruiter truely wants to get you in and you have the time to wait they’ll make the effort to help you.Nick Buys

Don’t listen to the ones saying just go 31B hold out. You’ll get the job. The army needs you more then you need it.
