Submitting my EPS packet this month and chose drill sergeant as an extra duty. Are there any options for a Guard member to be one? I understand that RSP units have them, but I have asked a couple recruiters and they do not know of any DS positions in the state. Is it possible to do a regular two year active duty tour as a DS if you're Guard? Any advice would be appreciated as no recruiter, my chain of command, nor google has any clue how to go about volunteering for this position as a Guard member.

Plenty of USAR Drill Sergeants but haven't heard of any NG Drills.

It is possible, but most units are way under-strength. I'm a current 11B DS in the Reserves. Our command isn't releasing anyone to go on ADOS orders because of it. That's not to say that it can't happen. There are FAR more DS slots in the USAR though. Good luck.

Also, don't listen to the guys talking about you being an E4. I'm the Drill Sergeant Candidate Leader in my unit (I prepare Soldiers to go to the Academy) and I've already put two Soldiers through that started at E-4. You get what's called a "Conditional Promotion". If you go to school and earn the hat and badge, you keep the rank. If you fail the school or fail to attend the school within 12 months, you lose the rank.

It's easy to switch from the guard to reserve for a new position. It happens all the time.
