I never heard of ALC. Looks like it may be an Army thing, didn't exist when I was in the USMC, that I know of!

ALC stands for Advanced Leader Course, and is the acronym that replaced BNCOC, or Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course. It is a requisite NCO course that is required of Army Staff Sergeants. At times one could have already been a Staff Sergeant and need the course completed prior to being eligible for selection to Sergeant First Class, at other times it is required to be completed before a promotable Sergeant can actually be promoted to Staff Sergeant. The USMC equivalent, I believe, would be the Career Course of the SNCOA, which to my understanding is a requisite course USMC Staff Sergeants must complete before being eligible for Gunnery Sergeant.
