Do Expeditionary Army units get Combat badges if they see combat?

We have a certain Soldier in my Unit who tells everyone that when he was deployed that he was shot at and proceeded to return fire, also had multiple people get injured during the line of duty. His excuse for not having a CIB is that the unit was expeditionary and that they weren't even supposed to be deployed so that's why he doesn't have the badge

Just telling stories seeking glory. No one begrudges the Purple Heart, no one begrudges the CAB (CIB not authorized). Tell him that what he is doing is committing acts of stolen valor, and he should prove it or stop telling BS stories. Thank you for your service.

SFC (Join to see) SPC Ted Ronayne - I think that's probably because the Combat Arms units are just automatically considered to be "Expeditionary."
As for how often they come under direct fire - it's more often than you'd think. When I took my company to Afghanistan in 2010-2011, we had ~20 comms teams that we sent to support every type of unit all across Afghanistan. I had teams spread from the Iranian border in west, to the Pakistan border in the east and up into the deep mountains in the center. We supported NATO and US Special Forces teams, Marine units, and local police units. My company had a realtively high number of folks come back with CABs for direct contact.
However, I only know about 51st ESB because that's where I did my company command time. lol

MAJ Bryan Zeski it's not a matter of coming under fire, the postsaid "CIB" so they're talking about an Infantryman. There are no Infantry or combat arms EUs in the Army, they're all combat support units.

MAJ Bryan Zeski that's good to know sir! I'm about halfway through 35F school now, so I don't know much about the mission of particular units on the MI side, only the basics of my job.
I'm hoping to end up in a unit with those kinds of opportunities to get out and about though...
