I'm currently reenlisting after I was discharged from the reserves honorably at the rank of E3. I'm going active duty. Would they continue my career from the 8 years or would I start over for my 20? Would time in service help me with faster promotions?

Your TIS will be reflected on your pay, so no real difference there. As for your rank, you will start over for the TIG in the rank you come back in with before the next promotion because your DOR will get reset.

SPC Keith Smith - Kinda sorta but not really. When going from Reserves to Active Duty.....or have been out for a time and came back in....your DOR gets recalculated. I know this from personal experience.

Thank you MSG (Join to see) . I went though something very similar. I joined USAR, and later went Active Duty. They reset all my dates, TIS, TIG, DOR, etc to the Date Entered Service for Active Duty, where I got no credit for 3 Years USAR. I had to file a request for recalculation of time (forgot the name of the request) to account for my USAR service. It was a nice surprise, as it also put me in another pay tier for TIS.

I did AD Navy had a ten year break, went in the Army Guard - TIG started on the date that I enlisted in the guard - 13 months later - released from Army to go to Air Guard - TIG started over again. But it worked out - I spent 16 years working a job that I loved and made it to SMSgt.

Ain't that the truth. You can go from serving as enlisted then getting out, going to college, and then coming back in with an officer commission. It's wild.

My problem was the Nam era GI bill had to be used within 10 years after getting out. I went straight back to work as a GS fro the next 18 years. I did not want to be a LT/CPT/MAJ anyway.

It depends on how long your break in service was. You can find the exact amount of credit you receive for your time in grade in AR 600-20 Army command policy under enlisted date of rank.
As for your question about years, only your active duty time counts for an active duty retirement, but your 8 years will count toward your time for pay.

To further expound on the good First Sergeant's statement, you can get credit toward retirement years from any Active Service in the Reserve or National Guard, AT, AD and ADT all counts. This should be recorded on your NGB 23, so make sure you end up with a copy of that document. You get credit toward retirement pay for all your IDT points plus active duty time. IDT points which are also on that form.
