Would anyone have some sound advice on entering law enforcement?

I'm in Western Pennsylvania. I'm looking to enter any form of law enforcement from Campus Police to Deputy Sheriff. Any tips, advice, leads and references would be greatly appreciated.

SPC Brent Morrison Have you talked to any of them? A good way is to research and see what different missions they have? That way you can ask more in depth question. It also shows them that you have done your homework. Think of it as an informal interview.

Yes, get out and talk with the officers and deputies. Be prepared though, the hiring process is long, extremely tiring, and very intrusive. Most of all, be honest...if you smoked pot, tell them (when the time comes during your process). If you fail to be COMPLETELY honest and it comes out during the poly, you're done with that agency, and likely done with all other agencies in that state, if not across the country.
Also, be prepared for a long and extremely demanding academy. Each state has its own standards for training, but most are very similar, and very strict, allowing for little error before one is washed out of the academy.
I've been in law enforcement for 25+ years now and love it...so I will say that it's worth it, if you can get in. Good luck!

Bigger police departments provide more opportunities. As mentioned before, do some ride alongs with different departments. Obviously the federal agencies pay more and have better benefits.

I went to Indiana University of Pa. Municipal Police Officer Academy.760 hrs.great school. Then I went to PennState for the Sheriffs Academy..only 80 hrs I was waivered thru most being I was already a sworn Police Officer

My best advice is the same as any other career. Be Honest and Honorable seek the truth and be sure honest when you find it. Good luck in your endeavors I wish only the best for you as you go forward.
