Washington. He was appointed as the General of the Armies by the Continental Congress. While on one hand you could say he was an opportunist, he had a huge challenge of leading a poorly funded largely militia army against the well funded British Army and Mercenaries. Yes, France helped us win independence, but Washington was the one who kept the Colonial Army together, eventually routing a great Britain.
