Permissive TDY - Do I have to sign in to initiate ptdy?

I just finished OCS and I am currently on leave. Once my leave is up, I have two days of travel. The next day after my two travel days, according to my orders, I have to report to my housing officer so that I can be signed onto the permissive tdy. My cadre from OCS were very vocal in telling us to do this. Now, my buddy from OCS who didn’t take any leave went straight to Fort Leonard Wood. He went to sign in and they told him they don’t do that any more and to come back on the last day of his ptdy. I called to verify this, and they said that this was the case. I guess my question is, is this true? I do not need to sign in or get anything stamped anymore? I don’t want to be reported as AWOL, if I decided to take a few extra days to get ready in Michigan to move down.

First let me start off by saying PTDY is for house hunting in the area in which you are going to be stationed so you can find some place to live. Some places don’t make you get the housing stamp because the Army feels due to service members having integrity they don’t have to micro-manage Soldiers anymore. If you start your PTDY and something happens to you and you’re still in Michigan, you will have a lot of explaining to do.
Bottom line, if you have been approved for 10 days PTDY, do the right thing and use it for what it is intended for, finding a place for you to live....
