What’s the process/steps to submitting a packet, getting selected, and then attending WOCS?

As a young soldier my old squad leader got selected for warrant and I thought that it sounded awesome. Now that I’m at that point in my career where that option is a reality I was curious as to what the whole process entailed and how hard it may be to get the packet together and all the extra things that go into it. Any chiefs out there have any advice/suggestions?

Hey SGT Tyler, I've been retired for 20 years but in 1989 you needed to get a packet mailed to you from the Warrant Officer Branch, 2 Letters of Recomendation, new photo and review your file to make sure everything is there that should be; (NCOER's, Awards),ect... There were some requirements to work in the field of which you are applyiing. Once you had all that together it was forwarded to the Board for selection. If selected you on your way to WOC school. Hope that helps.

Step 1, go to the WO recruitment website and verify that you meet the prerequisites for the MOS you want. If you don’t, work towards meeting them. You also need to start putting your packet together based off the checklist.
Step 2, find a warrant in the MOS you want to be. If you don’t know any, find a warrant and they will help you find one. Make sure you have started working on your packet. We will give you advice and guidance, but don’t expect us to do your packet for you. I’ve talked to plenty of guys that were interested, but didn’t have their packet together.
In addition to the letter of recommendation from a CW3-CW5, you also need a LOR from your company commander and battalion commander. You should ensure your CO is aware and he will probably tell your BC. When I was getting my packet together, my BC was my previous CC so he already knew me and the CW5 was already aware that I was getting my packet together. In fact, my packet was complete with the exception of his LOR when I sat down with him.
