I'm in the process of joining the Ohio national guard. I currently live about 12 hrs away from Ohio, but that's where I'll be attending college. I contacted an Ohio recruiter and he brought up the idea to work with my local MEPS so that I could process and enlist with the Ohio guard here in my home state, before I move for college. He mentioned he might even be able to fly down and be there with me. This recruiter is very knowledgeable. He was recommended to me by multiple other people, but this is the first time he's ever tried to do something like this, and he's still trying to figure out how everything would work. We're going to FaceTime later this week and talk about the details.

Has anyone else ever gone through something like this?
Is there any precedent for this?
Any tips or advice?

Yep. Out here MEPS refers to that as a "courtesy ship". Happens every year when a Guard recruit lives closer to one state's MEPS than to a MEPS in the state they are joining.

I live in Illinois but joined a different state's NG. I went through MEPS in Illinois, and my recruiter was in contact the whole time with the Chicago MEPS people while they processed me. There were no problems. It saved me from driving 11 hours.

Not sure why that would be a problem, where we live they sometimes go down to Nashville and use the MEPS instead of going to Louisville.
