I have been doing research regarding business ownership, self employment, entrepreneurship, solopreneurship, vetpreneurship, etc whatever you want to call it. I am interested in speaking to veterans who are currently business owners or who want to become business owners. What is keeping you from being widely successful? Or what is keeping you from taking the steps to become a business owner?

I started my own business in 2008. It's been incredibly hard work, the economy has not exactly been very helpful, and the amount of government (Fed, state, & local) red tape & taxes is mind-boggling but I'm glad I started Riley Pest Management and have no intentions of turning back.

I hear you there. I don't understand why unemployment and workers comp is required on 1-man businesses. As if I would claim unemployment against myself!
I use a PEO (professional employment organization). It is an IRS approved format that basically says I do not have any employees (I have 3) for payroll purposes. All 3 employees are employed by the PEO.
Now, that being said, I do still have to pay all those taxes, but I don't have to administer any of it, the PEO does. And that is a huge weight off my shoulders.

They are not a staffing agency like Manpower and they are a bit different than a payroll service like ADP. The agency I use is http://www.tilsonhr.com/full-service-hr/the-benefits-of-a-peo/ This link might give you an understanding of the PEO format.
Let us take care of your human resources management, so you can focus on your core business.

Believe me, if I could figure out the logic used by the state and feds I'd be a multimillionaire and never have to work again. The workers comp issue appears to be tied to I use pesticides routinely and it is the states way of avoiding any culpability or responsibility in the matter. The unemployment issue boils down to they require EVERY business to pay into it even if there is no way you could ever claim it because that pot of money is bankrupt and this is their way of trying to fix that ... again, don't get me started on that merry-go-round. I may have to look into this PEO thing - can you send me or message me with additional info at your convenience?

Congrats on being in business that long. You obviously have some things figured out! I wouldn't want to stop being an entrepreneur either. What business are you in?
I would value any input you have on my site at http://www.VetLaunched.com. Thanks.
