How does a soldier with a less than optimal food situation balance out their diet?

I am currently on rotation. The DFAC here has okay food, but the options for "green" foods is extremely limited. Much of the food is loaded with grease and butters to improve palatability. I have been training and preparing for OCR events and have been trying to watch what I eat as well as improving my exercise patterns, but I've noticed after eating certain things my body bogs down. I ate at the DFAC during the week of the GAFPB, and felt extremely weighed down during these events. Does anyone have any suggestions to help choose better options?

Depending on where you are currently hanging your boots, you may have some options in the PX. If not, see what can be easily and legally shipped to you. Otherwise, if all other options fail, then the food they got is all the food you get. You can also try talking with the DFAC Manager and see if they can expand their food options by ordering different things that better suit your nutritional needs. No guarantee, but it's worth a shot.
