I'm prior army 11B, now a GM3 within the coast guard. I'm currently in a unit with more than enough of my current rate, and still qualified in my old army mos, and I've heard of transfers happening via DD368 although not frequently. I want to get back to the infantry and keep getting mixed info from recruiters online. I have 2 years left and am curious of any ways to get back to active army, or reserve/army NG. I've heard of it happening from active to reserve within the same branch but nothing between them.

I know I'll most likely have to wait, just throwing it out there because why not, worst thing that happens is I stay where I'm at. Thanks everyone.

DD638s are usually for leaving the Reserve components to go Active. Active components have regulations in place already for administrative separations. Don't be fooled by the misnomer of "transfer". The only transfer out there is when you transfer from AD into the reserves to finish your MSO. Everything else is a separation.

The form in speaking on is a conditional release, so yes I suppose it would be a separation, I'd have to get it approved with specific conditions to finish my enlistment elsewhere. I'll have to talk to my immediate supervisor and see if it applies or not. And even then, you print it off, have your chain approve of it, then have the other component sign to agree to take you, bring it back and push it up. You're right in saying other recruiters can't approach you handing out false freebee tickets, that much I understand.

PO3 (Join to see) that's what I'm trying to tell you, there is no such thing as finishing your enlistment in another branch. That's why I said that "transfer" is a misnomer. An enlistment isn't a debt that can be passed from one owner to another. DD638s don't apply to active duty unless it's part of a commissioning packet. You can't be conditionally released from AD in any branch. Even if your O6 signs the DD638 that won't release you from active duty in your branch. There has to be some program in place already for releasing AD personnel, the 638 is just a part of the process

I did see some programs, I'm not sure they apply to my service, however. I'll have to find out, thanks!

Isn't a DD638 an application for awards?
