Most employers that I have gone to ask me whether I have worked on cars. When I say that I haven't but I can learn I always get the dreaded "Okay, we'll call you." How can I show them that I can use my skills as a tank mechanic to learn how to work on cars on the job?

The thing is that I don't think they understand how I could be qualified. I am going to keep trying though. Never accept defeat!

Transitioning out is hard. Our jobs in really have no equatable skills (no one drives a tank to Starbucks). On AKO there is a link to an MOS translator under the Self Service tab then My Education. My suggestion is to also utilize that GI Bill and try a tech school that trains car and motorcycle mechanics. Most out there participate in the GI Bill programs. Perhaps also explaining the you are proficient on Diesel engines and you are currently learning about Gasoline engines is a good place to spring from. As a former medic, my trouble with getting hired was I was either "over qualified" or "under qualified" for positions. You would think that they would take an over qualified vet right?

Same here man. I have gotten that "overqualified" thing too. I think they are just scared because they think that we would try to take their place. It makes no sense. I am using my GI bill and am going to school to get my degree in information systems and cyber security.

That is a field I had considered myself.

As to employment while you work towards that, perhaps you can find a vet owned or vet friendly business (I know there are vet opened business directories on the webs). Perhaps talking to another vet/business owner is the way to go.
