Commonly, but not always. Depends on the post.

from experience, E-1 to E-4 (exception is CPL) had room mates. You are not yet at the rank that requires a certain amount of living space, privacy, and separation for good order and discipline. That being said, should you be put in a leadership position over other Soldiers in your unit, command can determine that you need that degree of separation, and should 4187 a lateral promotion to CPL.

I had junior enlisted roommates as a CPL and notified my NCO support channel. I was basically blown off by my 1SG. To make matters worse, my buddy (SGT) was rooming with a PV2.

All that stopped when the brigade commander and CSM were doing random walk throughs of the barracks and saw my new E1 roommate walking around without a unit patch (in fairness to him, he had only been there 3 days.). They decided they were going to check his room personally. When the CSM ask for my name and rank his whole expression changed. All he said was “CPL Ford, why do I have NCOs living with soldiers?”

Immediately after he left informed my PL and PSG about what he said. They were shocked. The next day the entire barracks is as reorganized. All NCOs were given single rooms. All females were moved to on wing of that building. Turns out the housing NCO never bothered to code rooms as NCO only. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for the ass chewing I’m sure he received lol
