Seems like I PCS just infrequently enough to forget how this works. So I am authorized to report 30 days early. If I want to take 10 days ptdy, and get my losing unit to authorize it, can I "report" to the housing office 40 days prior to the date in my orders? And then for my DA 31, I just need to back it off travel days plus pcs leave days from that day to get the day I should sign out correct? Sorry if that's confusing. Typing this on my phone isn't formatting well.

You are always allowed to report up to 30 days early (unless OCONUS or a school). Those 10 days of PTDY are just days you won't be charged for leave. You're not authorized to report 40 days early. If you get "Early report authorized" in your assignment instructions then it's 60 days you can report early.
But I think your question is more of a housing question than a report date one. You should contact the housing office to see if they'll let you move in early. Since they are all privatized now it will be up to the company local policy. I doubt they will require you to inprocess before moving in as long as you can pay.

I think the answer to your question is "yes."

When you sign in to housing to start your PTDY you are not signing in to your unit. That would not count as part of the 30 days early report. This is, of course, assuming your losing unit authorizes the PTDY. It also assumes you utilize the entire 10 days of PTDY.

I say I "think" that is the answer, because I am not sure if that was your question.

SFC Casey O'Mally BUT you can't say "I'm going to report 30 days early, so I am going to take 30 days, and leave 60 days prior.". The early report basically means you can come off leave early, not leave your losing unit an EXTRA 30 days early.

Unless things have changed in the last few years... My last PCS (7th and final!) was about 3 years ago.

You can report early if your orders say "Early reporting authorized". If not, you should try to have them amended.

This is not my question. I am authorized to report early. My question is if that's the earliest I can show up to housing to start PTDY or can I show up a little early. I am in a position to be able to leave my unit to show up early but I don't want to sacrifice my PTDY.

CPT (Join to see) - Okay, I think I missed the scope of your question. You should be able to show up to Housing early to start your PTDY without signing in off leave. I would recommend calling them in advance to ask. Keep in mind that some Housing offices may not be willing to work with you if you're still on leave (since you're technically not assigned there until you sign in). Also, keep in mind that even though you have 10 days PTDY, but you sign a lease before the 10 days are over (for instance, on the 4th day of your PTDY), the PTDY will stop early and the Finance office will count those extra days as additional leave. I've had that happen before. I thought I received the full 10 days, but the Finance office said that once I sign the lease, the housing hunting (and therefore the PTDY) is officially over.

SFC (P) Palmer Utley - Thanks for the scoop. I'm not surprised to hear that. Things are always changing, and my knowledge base is starting to get pretty stale (retired in 2011).
